Dear Bloggers: Chill out with those pop-ups

March 11, 2016 By Jen Gabbard

Dear Bloggers: Your Pop-Ups Are Getting Out of Control

What does a cat have to do with pop-ups?

I like cats & fuck pop-ups, that’s what.

You want people to sign up for your list. I get it.

You need people on your list to sell your shit. I get it.

But for the love of God how much more annoying does your site have to become just to get more sign-ups?

First it was the hello bar. Then it was the pop-up that showed up when you read halfway through an article. Then it was the fancy slide in pop-up. And now? Well it’s full page pop-ups.

Full page pop-ups. Seriously?

Just install adblock you say? That doesn’t work on these shitty pop-ups.

Because they’re not really pop-ups you see, they’re just stupid static “pages” that you have to scroll out of.

And these full page pop-ups are just so enticing. They usually go like this:

“Hi, I’m Randy! I’m here to change your life for the better. Sign up today and I’ll let you in on all my secrets to success.”

Well shit Randy. I was just here to read your article about removing carrot stains from carpet, but now I’m intrigued…

I understand you have to hustle, but in that process do you need to make reading your blog an obstacle?

There’s a lot of us that visit your blog to read your shit, not sign up.

I used to sign up for a lot of “free newsletters.” I thought I’d be getting monthly updates, something simple. A nice little reminder that “hey I like this blog, I’ll go check out those new posts.”

But rather than simple updates I started getting a bunch of “buy my shit” e-mails. Daily.

Yeah that’s some hustling alright.

While we might not be paying customers we do value your articles. We comment, we share, we come back again next week.

Can you at least change your settings for us, just so that stupid pop-up only shows up once per day?

As it is I’m getting hit it with it as soon as I land on your site, as soon as I scroll down 2 lines, and then at least 3 more times before I’m finished reading an article.

Kind of fucks up the reading experience, wouldn’t you agree?

And while you’re at it can you make that pop-up opt out a little less condescending?

Just because I don’t sign up doesn’t mean I should be forced to click a button that says “No thanks. I hate free stuff,” when in reality it should just say “Fuck you for not taking the bait.”

Seriously though. Screw pop-ups.
